Our .UK ending domain names can be registered from 1 to 10 years. You can check when your registration is due for renewal using our domain look up tool.

Why should you renew your domain?

Most websites take a lot of hard work to build and if you’re a business, can be an essential asset. If you don’t renew your domain, while it won’t disappear overnight, it could ultimately end up being cancelled. Your registrar (the company who looks after your domain name for you) should be in touch when your domain is up for renewal, but it’s worth looking into yourself and making a note of when you need to take action.

How can you renew your domain name?

Renewing your domain name is a simple process between you and your registrar. It is likely they will email you before your renewal is due to let you know what you need to do to keep your domain name.

If you haven’t heard from your registrar, but have heard from us at Nominet that you need to renew, then you should still get in touch firstly with your registrar.

If you’re not sure who your registrar is or when your domain is due to expire then just enter your details into our domain lookup tool to check.

When can you renew your registration?

You can renew your domain name at any time before the expiry date and time. The registration term can be up to 10 years in the future should you wish to have it for a longer period.

You should contact your registrar to check with them and see how early they will allow you to renew and how long for.

What happens if you don’t renew your registration

If you don’t renew your registration then you will eventually lose your domain name which also means that any associated services, such as your website and related email addresses, won’t work.

Initially your domain name will be suspended, and later deleted.

If your site is for business, this will impact:

  • How your customers find you (and not your competitors)
  • How your customers contact you (instead of your competitors)
  • Online tools and sites that you use for business using your registered email address

If you no longer need or want the domain name and wish to make it available for others to register, you can let the renewal period lapse and no action is required.

What to do if you’ve received a cancellation email from Nominet

Firstly, contact your registrar and let them know that you want to renew your domain. The name and contact details of your registrar should be in the email you received, or you can find out who they are by typing your domain name into our domain lookup tool.

If for any reason you can’t contact them, you can get in touch with our customer support team using the details below. You can find further support on domain renewals here and help on managing your UK domain name here.
